Coming to us from Antiquorum Geneva is a rare version of the benchmark Rolex Submariner 5513. What makes this one special is it features an "Explorer" dial, meaning it has Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9, just like an Explorer would. On top of that, it also features an underline at 6 o'clock. It holds the title of being the last no-date Submariner to feature an acrylic crystal, the last to have a matte dial, the last to sport a bi-directional bezel, and the only Submariner to be produced with all three different dial styles that have been fitted to Rolex Submariner watches.
A gilt Submariner 5513 with Explorer dial that sold for CHF 340k at Phillips compared to a 1987 5513 with white gold surrounds. Of course the dials are the primary difference, but also notice the evolution of the case – the bevels on that Explorer dial are FAT, and much more narrow by the late '80s. It's part of what makes vintage Rolex so much fun to collect. Last week a new website popped up dedicated entirely to picking apart the history of the reference 5513 matte dial Submariner, cataloging the many subtle changes in the matte 5513 over its nearly 20-year production history. On the dial of the 5513, you’ll find the text ”SUBMARINER” and ”600ft = 200m. The modern Submariner, on the other hand, has four lines of text. The minimalistic text on the dial makes it less cluttered and more simple, which adds to the appeal of the 5513 in many people’s eyes.
The Explorer dial variation features numerals at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions, similar to the dial on the Rolex Explorer. As shown, this version (5513) has the following attributes: It is an early model 5513.My Submariner has the "dimple", I believe it's not so much a defect or designed to be there as much as it's just how the metal reacts to being "punched" for the hole. It doesn't bother me at all, embrace the dimple if you have one is my thought. Here's an old thread on the dimple effect.
